Hiddink: Possession Stats Are Over-Rated

Chelsea’s interim manager Guus Hiddink has said that he thinks people put too much stock into possession stats.

Chelsea played Manchester United over the weekend and the two clubs shared the possession of the ball reasonably evenly: The Blues had 49% possession compared to United’s 51%. Prior to that game, however, the Manchester club had enjoyed plenty of possession in their matches without creating many chances.

Their possession-based football drew criticism from the team’s shirt sponsor Adidas, but Hiddink felt it was unfair. He said, “You must not overrate the amount of possession. Most teams want the ball. What do you do with it? Say we had 65, 67 and 70% possession, but our opponents said, ‘We don’t care how much possession you have, we have the score on our side’. Do you secure your way of playing? Or do you go as soon as possible into the attack? I prefer the latter option. The first thought must be vertical”.

The possession stats weren’t the only thing that were shared on the day with both clubs also taking a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

Terry: No Communication From Club

John Terry spoke to the press after the club’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United over the weekend and admitted that there’s still been ‘no communication’ between him and the club’s hierarchy over the possibility of a new contract.

Terry announced two weeks ago that he has not been offered a new contract for when his current one expires at the end of the current season, admitting that he’ll leave Chelsea and explore the possibility of a career abroad. He has been linked with clubs in Qatar and America as well as the chance of a lucrative move to the ever-expanding Chinese Super League.

After Terry’s announcement Guus Hiddink, the club’s interim manager, suggested that Chelsea could yet find ways to keep the captain at the club beyond the end of the season. Terry, meanwhile, said that nothing had changed ‘from [his] point of view’.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game Terry said, “I made it very clear I wanted to stay. It’s a difficult one. The club is the most important thing. There is no communication between me and the club at the moment. I’ll never forget my memories here and they will live with me forever”.

Terry’s frustration has grown as he’s watched other players, such as Branislav Ivanovic, get offered new contracts whilst he hasn’t been. The 35 year old has enjoyed a stellar career at the West London club, winning Premier Leagues, FA Cups, League Cups and the Champions League. His time at the Blues hasn’t been without controversy, however. Terry was stripped of the captaincy on two occasions; once when he had an affair with the partner of his former team-mate Wayne Bridge and once when he was found guilty by the Football Association of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand.

Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United Match Report – 7th February 2015

A stoppage time strike from Diego Costa prevented Manchester United from taking all three points against the Blues at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, keeping Guus Hiddink’s unbeaten record alive. Jesse Lingard had given United the lead after an hour, but the Blues fought until the end to record a fourth consecutive home draw. The result is slightly irrelevant after Kurt Zouma suffered a serious injury, one which could see him miss the rest of the season, including the European Championships in France.

The midweek meeting with Watford was far from an enjoyable night for Blues fans, as the team toiled to create any kind of breakthrough, and they went home with a goalless draw. Despite that, Hiddink named an unchanged side for this clash, staying with his two defensive midfielders. That meant there was no place for Eden Hazard, while Alexandre Pato didn’t even make the bench.

That defensive minded approach didn’t do too much good in the first half, as United had the majority of the chances in the first 45 minutes. They piled pressure on the Blues defence, and the two-man shield in front of the back four didn’t do too much to keep them out. United had plenty of corners, but they also showed glimpses of a cutting edge going forwards.

Having just won 3-0 at home to Stoke, United’s attack was clearly in confident mood, and Louis van Gaal must have given them a little more freedom to express themselves. That belief saw them control the game, but the Blues had their share of chances. They were denied a penalty towards the end of the half, when John Terry’s volley struck the arm of Daley Blind.

The second half started a lot like the first, but things got a lot worse for Chelsea just before the hour mark. Kurt Zouma landed awkwardly after challenging for a ball in the air, and he had to be stretchered off. Having forced his way into the starting 11, it will be a massive disappointment for the young defender to have to recover on the side-lines.

Gary Cahill came on to replace Zouma, but the new look defence wasn’t able to hold out for very long, as Lingard’s fantastic turn and strike broke the deadlock. United were then in charge of the game, and Van Gaal’s men went into lock down to try and keep their lead.

There was a late Chelsea rally, however, and in the first minute of stoppage time confusion in the United defence let Costa through. He slid the ball around David De Gea, before finishing into the open goal. His celebration showed just how up for the match he was, but he and his teammates were unable to find a winner.

The point keeps the Blues in 13th position in the table and they’re at home again next weekend against Newcastle. After that, it’s Champions League action, with a daunting trip to Paris to face PSG.

Chelsea v Manchester United Match Preview (Premier League) – 7th February 2016

Chelsea head back to Stamford Bridge on Sunday as they take on a newly resurgent Manchester United side. After a good FA Cup win was followed by a big win in midweek, the Red Devils will be heading down here with plenty of confidence. The Blues should be feeling pretty good themselves after a fine FA Cup win of their own, but they’d certainly feel a lot better if they could get the three points here and move up the table.

Chelsea travelled to Old Trafford just last month in the league, and they came back with a 0-0 draw after a pretty poor display. Neither side were playing well back then, but United dominated a tame Chelsea side. Now that both sides have a few wins under their belts, will we get a more interesting game this time around?

It will certainly be a busy one, as there are plenty of things to watch out for. While this is another clash between Dutch managers in the Premier League, something the press seem to enjoy, there’s much more going on at the club. This will be the first home game since it was announced that John Terry won’t be having his contract renewed at the end of the season.

That news rocked fans, and there’s surely going to be some show of support for the captain, even more than usual. The majority of the fans seem to want him kept at the club, so this is the time for them to make their voices heard. If they campaign loud enough, it might just extend the defender’s stay, and he could possibly retire at the Bridge.

While Terry is set for the exit, we have two players who came in last month. Both Alexandre Pato and Matt Miazga were brought into the squad, but neither seem to currently have much match fitness. Pato doesn’t seem ready for the demands of the league, while Miazga came across from MLS, and their season has been over for a few months now. While they won’t start, we might see a brief substitute appearance at some stage for the new signings.

They’ll face an uphill task to make it into the team, as right now almost everyone is fit to play. While Radamel Falcao is still struggling, there doesn’t appear to be any other problems ahead of this one. Expect Hiddink to go with the two defensive midfielders once more, giving the team a solid base.

United won 3-0 at home to Stoke on Tuesday night, and it looked like they were playing with some creative freedom. Louis van Gaal had previously tied his men up in shackles defensively, which contributed to their problems. Will he keep up this new more expansive approach, or will he go defensive for this big game? We will see on Sunday, as Chelsea look to put a spanner in United’s top four hopes.

LCN Verdict: Chelsea to win 2-1

Watford 0-0 Chelsea match report – 3rd February 2016

Chelsea couldn’t find a way past a resilient Watford side on Wednesday as they failed to build on their win at Arsenal. Guus Hiddink kept his unbeaten run up with this point, but the Dutchman offered little attacking inspiration to edge the game. The Blues move up one place, to 13th, but there’s still little to shout about for fans of the reigning Premier League champions.

After making a few changes for the cup tie with MK Dons, Hiddink’s team took on a familiar look here. John Obi Mikel returned in place of Rueben Loftus-Cheek, with the Nigerian forming a defensive midfield duo with Nemanja Matic once more. Cesc Fabregas moved into a more attacking midfield role, while Willian replaced Eden Hazard in attacking midfield. Kurt Zouma came back into the team for Gary Cahill at the back.

Zouma was forced into action pretty often in the first half, as the home side had the run of the early stages. Thibaut Courtois was the busier of the two goalkeepers, he was at full stretch a number of times in the first 45 minutes. The Hornets had 10 shots in a cagey first half, which was a massive change from the intensity shown by the Chelsea team at MK Dons over the weekend.

The second half started off a lot better for the Blues, as a blocked shot from Oscar fell to Mikel. The holding man isn’t one you’d associate with troubling goalkeepers, but his long range shot took a deflection, and it almost looped over the head of Heurelho Gomes.

The Blues finally made an attacking change after 72 minutes, as Hiddink sacrificed a defensive midfielder for Hazard. Having finally opened his account for the season at the weekend, he probably should have seen a little more of the game. That being said, it’s hard to fault the manager for being concerned about the state of this back four, and giving them as much cover as possible.

Hazard helped to cut open the Watford defence, playing a fantastic pull back to Branislav Ivanovic after some great Chelsea play. The Serbian’s shot was saved by Gomes, but it was a sign that the Belgian is slowly returning to being the attacking influence he was last season.

Gomes had to be at his best to deny a header from Diego Costa, saving his side from suffering a late defeat. The Hornets may have dominated the first half, but the Blues took charge of the second, and only Gomes stopped them from taking all three points.

While this wasn’t the worst result of the campaign, it was yet another failure to win back to back games. That’s something the Blues haven’t managed to achieve all term, and now they’re back to square one. It looks like that late winning run to make the top four was just a pipe dream after all.

LCN Man of the Match: John Terry

John Terry Will Leave Chelsea In The Summer

Chelsea’s 35-year-old captain John Terry will not sign a new contract at the club and will leave in the summer, according to reports.

Terry joined Chelsea as a 14-year-old and has so far played 696 games for the West London club, winning the Premier League four times, the FA Cup five times and the Champion’s League once. Much like with his former team-mate Frank Lampard, though, he’s decided to call time on his Chelsea career, saying, “Ideally, I would have loved to stay, but the club’s moving in a different direction”.

There does seem to be some confusion over the matter, however, with the club themselves suggesting an agreement could yet be reached to keep their captain at the club. A spokesman for Chelsea said, “John was advised that while no new deal was currently on the table, that situation could change in the coming months. The club has the utmost respect for John and everything he has helped us achieve to date. He is a fantastic servant of Chelsea and a superb captain. As such, the club will keep the channels of dialogue open”.

Terry, though, seems convinced that he’ll be moving on, saying, “It’s a ‘no’ at the minute. The club will move on. No player is ever bigger than the club. No doubt they’ll sign one or two great centre-backs. I feel as though I’m in great nick, I’m playing great and I’ve got a couple of years to go”.

Several people agree with Terry, including his current centre-back partner Kurt Zouma who said, “I think he can play for another one or two years. For me, he can play many more times. He is still at a top level. He has been playing very well since I arrived at Chelsea. His performances have been consistent. Since I have been at the club, I haven’t seen him play badly. That’s the truth.

Chris Sutton, who played for Chelsea in the 1999-2000 season, said it was ‘disappointing’ that Chelsea were willing to allow Terry to leave. He told BBC Radio 5 live, “Clubs don’t show enough loyalty to players. John Terry’s been a tremendous servant, he’s been outstanding for the last 15 or 20 years for Chelsea and he deserves better”.

The chair of the Chelsea Supporters Group, Trizia Fiorellino, confirmed that Chelsea fans feel similarly disappointed by the news, saying, “He played every minute of every league game last season and we won the title. I think the club owe us an explanation”.

Terry is certain that if he does leave the club then it won’t be for another English team. He said, “It will be elsewhere for sure. I couldn’t play for another Premier League club. It’s not going to be a fairytale ending. I’m not going to retire at Chelsea, which it took me a couple of days to get over”.

Terry has played more games for a single club than anyone other than Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. He has notched up 477 leagues games for the defending Premier League champions and has captained the team during their most successful ever spell. He is also the highest-scoring defender ever in the Premier League with 40 goals to his name.

Terry saw his game time limited under Jose Mourinho at the start of this season, with the Portuguese boss even substituting him at half-time during Chelsea’s loss to Manchester City at The Etihad in August. The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ was sacked by Chelsea’s owner, Roman Abramovich, at the end of last year and Guus Hiddink came in to replace him on an interim basis. Hiddink has restored Terry to the Blues’ starting line-up since his arrival.

Though the Chelsea defender’s career has been littered with numerous successes, he’s also suffered his fair share of problems during his time at the club. In the 2008 Champions League final he missed the penalty that saw Manchester United lift the cup, whilst in 2010 he was temporarily stripped of the club’s captaincy after it emerged that he had had an affair with his former team-mate Wayne Bridge’s partner. He was also stripped of the captaincy in 2012 and banned for four matches after he was found guilty of racially abusing Queen’s Park Rangers’s defender Anton Ferdinand by the Football Association.

Chelsea Are Communicating Better Under Hiddink, Says Mikel

The communication between the players at Chelsea is better since the arrival of interim manager Guus Hiddink, according to their midfielder John Obi Mikel.

Hiddink was brought in by Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich when the Russian billionaire decided to sack Jose Mourinho for the second time at the end of last year. Chelsea endured their worst start since the late 1960s under the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’, with the Blues losing nine times in the league under the Portuguese manager.

The defending Premier League champions haven’t lost since the Dutchman took over at the helm, however, and Mikel believes that that is down to the improved communication in the ranks under their interim boss. He said, “It’s the way he communicates with the players and maybe that’s what the players felt they didn’t get from the previous manager”.

Mikel also felt that Jose Mourinho often froze players out if they weren’t in the first-team. He said, “Sometimes players – not just because they’re not playing – you need to communicate with them. You need to speak to them and don’t just ignore them because players like to be communicated to. This is what he has brought into the football club. In some ways you barely know he is in there, he is that calm and relaxed”.

Mikel was rumoured to be the subject of numerous bids last summer, but the Portuguese manager refused to sanction his departure from London. The Nigerian rarely started under Mourinho this term, however, only featuring regularly once Hiddink arrived as the club’s interim manager.

This is the second time that Hiddink has come into the West London club as their interim manager. He was also brought in in 2009 when Abramovich decided to sack Luis Felipe Scolari after the Brazilian failed to replicate his international form at club level in the Premier League. He led them to the FA Cup that season, something that could yet be replicated in this campaign.

Chelsea Will Face Man City In The FA Cup Fifth Round

The defending Premier League champions have been drawn to face Manchester City in the next round of the FA Cup, sponsored by Emirates.

Chelsea beat Milton Keynes Dons by 5 goals to 1 in the fourth round of the competition, meaning that they entered the draw for the next round. The ties will take place on the weekend of the 19th through to the 22nd of February.

Though there are some juicy ties to look out for, including the lowest-ranked team remaining in the competition, League One’s Shrewsbury Side, playing host the Manchester United, it is undoubtedly the match-up between the two most recent Premier League champions that has caught the eye.

It will be Manchester City’s third tie away from home against Premier League opposition in the competition so far and Chelsea’s interim manager, Guus Hiddink, thinks it will be a ‘huge game’. When asked about the draw he said, “It’s already a final!”.

MK Dons 1-5 Chelsea Match Report – 31st January 2016

Chelsea set up a Fifth Round meeting with Manchester City after crushing Championship MK Dons 5-1 at Stadium MK. The Blues put in a dominating performance from the start, with Oscar hitting a first half hat-trick. Eden Hazard finally opened his account for the season, while Bertrand Traore came off the bench to score. Given the number of chances they had, they could well have scored 10 here.

Guus Hiddink picked a very strong line up for this game, as expected. Diego Costa was supported by Cesc Fabregas, Oscar and Hazard, while Rueben Loftus-Cheek got a start. The only change to the back four saw Abdul Baba Rahman come in for Cesar Azpilicueta, while Hiddink didn’t even give Asmir Begovic a run out ahead of Thibaut Courtois.

From the off Chelsea were attacking the Dons, and the gulf in class was evident. They had 15 chances in the first half alone, with Costa passing one up and Oscar missing two before he got his first goal. Costa made the opener for the Brazilian, after taking advantage of Kyle McFadzean’s mistake he laid it off for the midfielder to tap home.

Chelsea were looking like they could go on and run up a huge score, but then MK Dons equalised out of nowhere. Darren Potter’s deflected effort flew past Courtois, putting the Championship side level. It wasn’t exactly a deserved goal, but it sent the home support into a frenzy.

Oscar got his second of the game to put the Premier League side back ahead, after being played through wonderfully by Loftus-Cheek. His ball was perfect for the Brazilian’s run, and Oscar provided a great finish to score the team’s, and his, second.

With half time approaching, Oscar needed no help in the build up to the third goal. He cut in from the left hand side, dribbled into the centre and hit a fantastic effort from the edge of the box. It was another brilliant goal from him, and it gave the playmaker a first ever hat-trick in English football. That saw the Dons head in 3-1 down at the break, having been completely outclassed.

10 minutes into the second half and the Blues were on the attack again. Hazard chased a pass into the box, but before he could reach it he was fouled by the goalscorer Potter. After much deliberation, John Terry sorted matters and told Hazard to take the kick. The Belgian scored, finally getting his first goal this season.

Youngster Bertrand Traore came off the bench for Costa, and he hit the fifth goal, wrapping up the win. After the game the Blues were out first in the draw for Round Five, and they meet Manchester City at the Bridge next. That’s going to be a massive game, one which could well decide the destination of the cup.
