Chelsea Board Are Looking At Their Options

It has emerged that Chelsea Football Club are considering different managerial options to replace Jose Mourinho, should the current manager fail to turn things around at Stamford Bridge in the coming weeks.

Chelsea’s owner, Roman Abramovich, led talks with his board of directors today in the wake of the club’s 2-1 loss to Leicester City at The King Power Stadium at the weekend. The loss was the club’s ninth in their opening sixteen games. The defending Premier League champions currently sit just a point above the relegation zone and have only won two of their last ten games.

Despite losing just one of his opening 99 league games at Stamford Bridge as manager, the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ has overseen four losses at home in the club’s last eight matches there.

As things currently stand there is a lack of clarity regarding whether or not Mourinho will remain in charge for Chelsea’s match against Sunderland at the weekend or if the club plan to replace him before the game kicks off.

The Chelsea board gave Mourinho their backing in October, but league results have not improved since and the Blues’ manager appears to be blaming anyone but himself for their poor results. After the match against the league leaders Leicester, Mourinho said, “I did an amazing job last season and brought the players to a level that is not their level and now they can’t maintain it”.

With Mourinho having returned the title to Stamford Bridge last May and having signed a new four year contract in August, Roman Abramovich is keen to stick with his man. Chelsea’s disastrous league form, which has seen them take a mere 15 points from 16 games, has given the Russian cause to re-think his strategy.

Chelsea are 20 points behind Leicester City after their loss to them at the weekend and they are currently 14 points shy of the Champion’s League places. They are through to the last 16 phase of this season’s Champion’s League competition but are unlikely to feature in it next year unless they win it outright.

Mourinho has a proven record of success as a manager, and offering him the chance to turn things around is seemingly what is delaying Abramovich’s decision over his future. The January transfer window opens soon and, with the Portuguese manager having spent more money than any other manager in the history of football, the chance to bring in some new faces and shift on some of the perceived deadwood could offer the 52 year old the opportunity to get the club’s season back on track.

Another reason Chelsea’s board are reluctant to make any rash decisions regarding the manager’s position is that there is a lack of a quality successor in the managerial market. Carlo Ancelotti is currently unemployed but has already been sacked by Chelsea and is reportedly being lined up by Bayern Munich to take over from Pep Guardiola, should the Spaniard decide to take over from Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City in the summer.

Diego Simeone is another manager that Abramovich is keen on, but it is believed that he wants to stay at Atletico Madrid for at least one more season. That means that Guus Hiddink, one of the few managers to leave Chelsea without being sacked by the board, could return.

The Times are reporting that Juande Ramos is being considered as a potential caretaker manager, should the club choose to remove Mourinho from his position. The Spaniard would be keen to return to the Premier League, having previously won silverware with Tottenham Hotspur, and he is out of work after leaving the Ukrainian club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk last year.

Although Chelsea’s Russian owner would like to see Mourinho turn things around at the club there is a fear that he has alienated too many players and some of his relationships are now irreparable. The result of the match against Sunderland at the weekend could prove to be the deciding moment for Abramovich and his board.

Mourinho: I Was Betrayed

Jose Mourinho used his post-match interview in the wake of his team’s loss to Leicester City at The King Power Stadium to launch an astonishing attack on his Chelsea players.

The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ pointed the blame at virtually everyone except himself after the game, even going so far as to say that he got his team playing far better than their talent suggests they should have been, saying, “One possibility is that I did an amazing job last season and brought the players to a level that is not their level and now they can’t maintain it”.

The loss left the defending Premier League champions just two points off the relegation zone after sixteen games. Chelsea have only scored 18 goals this season and they’ve only managed one in their last eight hours and eleven minutes of league football.

Goals from Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez condemned Chelsea to their ninth league loss of the campaign and left them 16th in the Premier League. After the game Mourinho said, “One of my best qualities is to read the game for my players and I feel like my work was betrayed”.

With the Blues having lost just three games last term, something has clearly gone wrong this time around and Mourinho is getting increasingly frustrated. He said that he has ‘no complaints’ with his players’ work in training but that it was ‘frustrating’ to observe ‘what they do in matches’.

Although Chelsea could drop into the bottom three if they lose to Sunderland at the weekend, Jose Mourinho does not believe that his team are in a relegation battle. He said, “I accept we are in the relegation zone, but I don’t accept we are in a relegation battle. You look at the table and we are there, but you think you are in a relegation battle if you think you are there for three or four months. I don’t think that”.

He went on to say that he genuinely thinks his club could yet battle for a place in the top six, but that right now he lacks pride in the work that his players are producing on the pitch. He said, “We can’t finish top four, but we can still finish top six because so many teams are dropping points. At the moment, we are in a zone where I feel ashamed”.

Despite the fact that he is enduring his worst campaign as a manager in any division in any country, the Portuguese manager has no intention to quit Stamford Bridge. He said, “The only thing I can say is that I want to be the manager. I have no doubts and I think you know me well enough to know that I am not afraid of a big challenge and in this moment it is a really big challenge. I want to stay and I hope Mr Roman Abramovich and the board want me to stay because I want to stay”.

The Chelsea manager was far from impressed by the attitude of Eden Hazard in the match. The PFA Player of the Year from last season was involved in an incident at the start of the season that led to Jose Mourinho publicly criticising his medical staff. In turn that led to the resignation of the club doctor, Eva Carneiro, who is now suing the club for unfair dismissal.

It seems appropriate, then, that Hazard was involved in another medical incident last night. He was involved in a challenge with Jamie Vardy after thirty minutes of the match and informed the medical staff that he wasn’t fit enough to carry on. Mourinho wasn’t impressed and delivered a somewhat sarcastic dress down for the winger, saying, “He made the decision to come off, so it must be a serious injury. His first reaction was ‘I can’t continue’, his second reaction was ‘I want to try’, but after his first step back on the pitch he said he couldn’t. He’s injured clearly”.

Having criticised his players and suggesting they’re no longer as good as he is the Portuguese manager then turned on the Leicester City ball boys. He felt that they wasted time in the match and said, “They [Leicester] fought with everything, they defended with everything, and the ball boys were amazing too. I say the point about the ball boys because it’s a disgrace for the Premier League, but I want to make it clear I don’t want that story to be in front of a result Leicester deserved”. The main story after the match is not the ball boys but Jose Mourinho and his future at Chelsea Football Club.

Leicester v Chelsea (Premier League) – 14th December 2015

Chelsea head to Leicester on Monday night looking to get back to winning ways in the league against the current table-toppers. With the Foxes in fantastic form, it’s going to take a huge performance to get a win at the King Power, but it’s something the Blues need if they are to have any hope of making the top four.

The manager has close to a full squad available for this one, with only Radamel Falcao a doubt for the trip. But the lack of the team’s third choice striker shouldn’t burden Jose Mourinho too much, especially after getting three big stars back in the past week. Thibaut Courtois came back in against Bournemouth, while John Terry and Ramires returned from injury against Porto.

It’s hard to see Mourinho making many changes from the team who saw off Porto. It wouldn’t make much sense to potentially stop the momentum gained from the team’s best display this season. We should see basically the same line up, and they’ll have had a good few days to rest after their midweek exploits.

Leicester weren’t playing in midweek, which could give them a slight edge. Chelsea certainly have to be wary of the Foxes’ form, as they come into the weekend top of the table, having blown away half the league so far. After four wins and a draw from their last five, it’s hard not to be impressed by what former Blues boss Claudio Ranieri has accomplished so far.

Chelsea won in their last trip here back in April. That game was a very different one, with winning the league title the goal back then. Goals from Didier Drogba, John Terry and Ramires secured a 3-1 win for the Blues, which saw them go 49 points ahead of the struggling Foxes. Now, Chelsea sit 17 points behind their opponents, which shows how far Leicester have come, and how far Mourinho’s team have fallen.

Despite that, there is still hope for Chelsea fans here. Leicester haven’t been seeing off the big sides at home, they scrapped a few draws with Tottenham and United, but they lost to Arsenal. There is a chance for Chelsea to get a result here, they just need to play like the Chelsea of last term. While the leaders are dangerous, they’re still very beatable.

Right about now, three points are on Jose Mourinho’s Christmas list, along with goals from star men Diego Costa and Eden Hazard. The festive period would be much easier if either of those two had their confidence restored in front of goal. While both have shown signs of improvement, they won’t be back to their best until we see them scoring again.

Hopefully, those goals will come, and the Blues will get themselves on a winning run. A win at the King Power would send out a huge message, and could see the team back to their best but it might just be a bridge too far.

LCN Verdict: 1-1 draw

Costa: I Shouldn’t Have Thrown My Bib

Chelsea forward Diego Costa has admitted that he was wrong to throw his training bib at Jose Mourinho during the defending Premier League champion’s match against Tottenham Hotspur last month.

The Brazilian born Spanish international allowed his frustration at not being picked for the game against the club’s London rivals to spill over when it became apparent that Mourinho would not even be using him as a substitute in the game. As he returned to his place on the bench he appeared to remove his training bib and throw it at his Portuguese manager.

That incident came after the player seemed to have a run-in with the Chelsea boss during a Champion’s League tie, with both people shouting at each other as the match neared half-time. Costa has confessed he was wrong to challenge the manager who called himself the ‘Special One’ when he first arrived in England. The striker said, “The bib [incident] is in the past. I made a mistake”.

Speaking to the Spanish radio station Onda Cero, Costa claimed that everything was good between himself and Mourinho, despite the fact that he was dropped to the bench for Chelsea’s games against Spurs and Bournemouth. He said, “My relationship with Mourinho is amazing, we get on really well. There are things you need to control but the bib thing was an impulse”.

The forward returned to the Blues’ starting line-up for their 2-0 win over Porto in the Champion’s League on Wednesday and it was his running and pressing that created the side’s opening goal. He has under-gone a poor run of form in recent games, however, struggling to replicate the form he displayed last season when he netted 20 goals and helped Chelsea to win the Premier League title.

Mourinho played down the bib incident after the game against Tottenham and said that he had ‘no issue’ with the player, but he will no doubt appreciate the striker’s show of contrition as Chelsea head into the busy Christmas period. With Costa likely to start for the Blues in their match against Leicester on Monday night the Chelsea manager will be hoping his goal-scoring improves as much as his attitude appears to have done.

Mourinho: I Dream of Fourth Placed Finish

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho used his pre-match press conference to say that he still thinks his side can achieve a ‘dream’ fourth placed finish in the Premier League.

Speaking ahead of the defending Premier League champion’s game against league leaders Leicester City, the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ said, “Maybe we have a chance to dream with a great finish and finish fourth. While it is mathematically possibly, we have to try”.

The Blues are currently 14th in the Premier League, an incredible 14 points off fourth placed Manchester United and 17 points shy of this weekend’s opponents Leicester. Chelsea have lost five of their last ten league games, including four of their last seven. Their loss to Bournemouth last weekend means that the Cherries are the first newly promoted team to win at Stamford Bridge since Charlton managed it in April of 2001.

The defeat to Bournemouth left Chelsea just two points above the relegation zone and Mourinho admitted it wasn’t something he saw happening before the game kicked off. He said, “Before we lost the last three points against Bournemouth, I was convinced of fourth, of a great December for us. I have to be honest and say the last defeat was something that I was far away from believing was possible”.

Despite dreaming of finishing fourth the Portuguese boss also admitted that this season’s topsy-turvy league means that teams are going to struggle to put any kind of run of form together. He said, “The reality is that some clubs are doing so well, and some are not capable of doing what people are used to. It is not possible for clubs to win three, four, five, 10 matches in a row now”.

With rumours circulating that Mourinho could lose his job if he fails to win the next two league games the Chelsea manager was quick to insist that he’s in it for the long haul. He told the gathered press, “I imagine myself finishing my contract with Chelsea. I have three and half years on my contract. After that I imagine myself coaching, not every club, there are some clubs I will never manage. I think that the bad results are not normal, but the chance for every manager to do his work and finish what he started is. What is not normal is what is happening now”.

The Blues have a great opportunity to return to business as normal against the Foxes, a team that has been flying in recent weeks. Having lost just one of their last ten games and managed draws against Stoke, Southampton and Manchester United the Chelsea manager will be keen to ask questions of the club’s former boss Claudio Ranieri and his current charges.

Mourinho: Chelsea Won’t Sack Me

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is confident that the club’s owner, Roman Abramovich, will not make a ‘rash decision’ and sack him, it has been revealed.

Mourinho, talking at the press conference before his side face Porto in a make or break game in the Champion’s League tonight, said, “Abramovich believed in me twice: one, when he brought me back to the club, and the second time when he gave me a new four-year contract in the summer”.

The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup in his first spell at Stamford Bridge from 2004 to 2007. He returned in the summer of 2013, having also endured success at Inter Milan and Real Madrid in the intervening six years.

This season has seen Chelsea Football Club endure a torrid start to the campaign, losing eight of their first fifteen league games. The defending Premier League champions lost just one of their first 99 home league games with Mourinho at the helm, but they’ve now lost four of their last seven at Stamford Bridge.

With the Blues already out of the League Cup and yet to ensure their qualification to the last sixteen of the Champion’s League, rumours have emerged that the Portuguese boss is set to lose his job if Chelsea fail to win their next two games.

Mourinho, though, doesn’t think that’s likely as long as Abramovich is at the top of the club. He said he believed he would be safe “Because I think I did lots of good things for this club. I don’t think the owner is a person to change with the wind. I know the wind of results is an important wind and I know this wind is really strong because the results in the Premier League are really bad”.

Chelsea, who won the Champion’s League in 2012 when Roberto Di Matteo was manager, must avoid defeat tonight if they are to make it through to the knockout stages of the competition. With Manchester United failing to do just that last night and Arsenal’s qualification far from assured, the pressure is on Chelsea to join Manchester City in the next round to represent the English clubs.

Chelsea’s former defender, Wayne Bridge, thinks that his former club and previous manager shouldn’t be under-estimated. He said, “You wouldn’t say it on current form but it would be a great story for a team that doesn’t do too well in the Premier League. To go and win the Champions League – it’s something he [Mourinho] is capable of – but it’s a very big ask at the moment. But with Mourinho being there you can never underestimate what he can produce”.

The Chelsea manager will be hoping that his former defender is right and that the club could yet produce something special in the Champion’s League. If they fail to then the Portuguese maestro could find that the ‘winds’ change in the wrong direction and his faith in Roman Abramovich is misplaced.

FIFA Medical Chief: I’ll Support Carneiro

FIFA’s medical committee’s head has confirmed that he will be offering his support to Eva Carneiro, Chelsea’s former doctor, in her case against the club.

Carneiro is currently in the process of suing the defending Premier League champions for constructive dismissal, whilst also getting involved in an individual legal action against the Blues’ manager Jose Mourinho.

The former club doctor was dropped from being involved with first-team duties in the aftermath of Chelsea’s game against Swansea City on the opening day of the season. Carneiro ran on to the pitch to treat Eden Hazard after the winger lay injured on the floor and the referee, Michael Oliver, had waved the medical staff on numerous times.

Mourinho, however, was not impressed with her decision and called her ‘naive’ after the game. Chelsea were already down to 10 men after Thibaut Courtois had been sent off for taking out Swansea’s striker Bafetimbi Gomis. The fact that Carneiro and Jon Fearn, Chelsea’s physiotherapist, treated Hazard meant he had to be removed from the field of play, leaving the Blues with nine men for a period of time towards the end of the match.

Mourinho came under criticism for his post-match comments, including the suggestion that even if Carneiro were a ‘secretary on the bench’ she should show a better understanding of the rules of the game. The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ was cleared of using discriminatory language by the Football Association, however.

FIFA’s medical chief, Michel D’Hooghe, said, “Of course I support Eva Carneiro. She did her job, she did her duty – when somebody is medically in trouble she has to intervene. Of course she has my support and the whole medical committee’s. I have had email contact with her and she is very happy with the global support of the medical world in football”.

The FIFA chief also said that he would help her find a new job in football, even if it was likely that she might struggle to begin with. He added, “I can imagine that in the short term she might have some problems with that. But with her personality and her competence she must certainly have a great future and if I can help her I will do it”.

Alex Ferguson: Chelsea Should Keep Mourinho

Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has offered his support to under-fire Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, it has emerged.

Speaking at a TechCrunch Disrupt London event, Ferguson said, “There is no point in sacking one of the best coaches of all time”. It comes after rumours emerged that Mourinho could be given the sack if Chelsea fail to win their next two games, having lost eight of the first fifteen games that the defending Premier League champions have played in so far this season.

The Blues are 14th in the league, just three points above the relegation zone and seventeen points off Leicester City at the top. Despite losing only one league game at Stamford Bridge during the first 99 that they played under Mourinho’s management, Chelsea have lost four of their last seven games at home so far this season.

Yet Ferguson feels that releasing Jose Mourinho from his current position would be an act of folly by Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich. He said, “He has sacked so many coaches in the last 10 years. I am sure he has learned by it. He has to trust and have confidence that Jose can turn it round. In every country he has managed in he has won the big trophies. It would be foolish to sack him. It would be bad management”.

Mourinho and Ferguson clashed heads numerous times as rival managers, with the Portuguese coach believed to be desperate to take over from the Scot when he left Manchester United, only to see David Moyes given the job instead.

During his first spell in West London the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ won two titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup for the club. He added another league title and a third League Cup trophy last season, having won four major trophies with Inter Milan and Real Madrid in between his two different management spells at Chelsea.

Ferguson believes that Mourinho will find a way to turn things around at Stamford Bridge, saying, “Now is the first time he has been confronted with non-success during his whole career. For the first time in his life he has had to deal with bad publicity and adversity and that is a challenge. But there are signs they are getting back to a balance, although they lost on Saturday. All good leaders will eventually find a solution. I know the guy and I know the work he has done in football and I can’t see it lasting long”.

Jose Mourinho is the most successful manager Chelsea have had during the Roman Abramovich era and Ferguson believes that this weekend’s game against Leicester City will offer the perfect opportunity for the Foxes to put themselves in prime position heading in to the winter break. He said, “This is a big opportunity for them. The way they are playing, they could win the league. They have a challenge now of whether they can go the whole way with this current squad. If I was Claudio Ranieri I would want investment in January”.

Mourinho Claims He Had No Problem With Night Out

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claims he had no issues with his players going on a night out that lasted into the early hours of Thursday morning.

Some members of the Chelsea squad went out in London on Wednesday night, with Diego Costa being one of the players pictured leaving a night club in the capital. Costa was an unused substitute in Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Tottenham Hotspur last weekend and appeared to throw his bib at his manager in disgust when he realised he wouldn’t make the field of play.

Far from being angry about the incident, however, the Portuguese boss admitted the players ‘needed’ the party and that they went out on the town with his blessing. He said, “The next morning everyone trained very well, they were happy. They told me the dinner was good and the after-dinner was better”.

Mourinho saw Thibaut Courtois return to the starting XI for the home match against Bournemouth on Saturday, a game that Chelsea went on to lose 1-0. Courtois’ presence in the line-up was one of the only bright moments for the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’. He said, “To lose your number one for three months, something like 19 matches without the best goalkeeper in the world, is tough for us. Thibaut was our keeper all last season and you know how fundamental he was, it’s important to have him back”.

The Chelsea manager also claimed that there are no problems between him and his Brazilian born Spanish international striker Diego Costa, despite those photographs surfacing of him enjoying his night out after the player’s party. Mourinho said, “He’s been very good, he trained very well. Diego is the type of player who always tries. I just need him to be what he is, I don’t need a reaction”.

He will be hoping to see a reaction from his players after they suffered their fourth home defeat in their last seven matches and their eighth defeat in the Premier League this season. The defending Premier League champions sit just three points off the relegation zone and fourteen points away from Manchester United in fourth spot.

Mourinho: Top Four Is No Longer Realistic

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted for the first time this season that the top four may no longer be an achievable target for the defending Premier League champions.

Speaking in the aftermath of his side’s home loss to newly promoted side Bournemouth, Mourinho said, “Our objective is to finish top four. Before this game it was realistic to think that our quality would take us out of this position but maybe now we have to think about top six”.

in Jose Mourinho’s first 99 league games as Chelsea manager they suffered just one defeat at Stamford Bridge. They have lost four times in their last seven league games in this campaign. It is that loss of home form that is causing Chelsea such issues in the defence of their Premier League crown.

The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ was led to question his players’ consistency after the poor run of form that has seen them lose at home to Crystal Palace, Southampton, Liverpool and now Bournemouth so far this season. It has left Chelsea just three points off the relegation zone and a remarkable 17 points behind the league leaders Leicester City.

After Chelsea suffered their eighth defeat in fifteen games Mourinho said, “If our players are not able to give the maximum every day that is a problem. If you analyse match after match there are a few layers where it is difficult to be consistent. You think there is evolution, but maybe it is just one moment in which they are good”.

Mourinho once again felt that his side suffered at the hands of a referee when Diego Costa was denied a possible penalty. The Brazilian born Spanish international avoid a sliding tackle from Bournemouth captain Simon Francis, only to see the ball strike the Cherries’ defender’s arm. The Chelsea manager said, “We didn’t deserve to lose. Our opponent – in the period that they thought only of defence – managed to get a goal and there was a clear mistake from the referee. I think it is a clear handball and penalty with the score at 0-0”.

In a moment of what some might call ironic hypocrisy, the Portuguese manager also felt that Bournemouth defended deeply during the game. He said, “They played in a way that some call intelligent, some say is not fair play. They were taking time, calling for the medical department and drinking water like it is a basketball timeout”.

The fact that the referee didn’t give the penalty wasn’t the only thing that irked Mourinho, with the Chelsea manager also reacting to reports that Bournemouth’s goal had a hint of offside about it. He said, “If it was offside it is another episode that goes against us, but I did not see it”.

The only bit of good news emerging from the weekend is the fact that the Chelsea manager is confident that his team has enough quality to get out of their current situation. He said, “I am concerned of course. There is no chance that Chelsea will be fighting relegation”.
