Arsenal v Chelsea Match Preview (Premier League) – 26th April 2015

Chelsea head to the Emirates on Sunday to take on second placed Arsenal, knowing that a win would put them within three points of finally confirming the Premier League title. With a 10 point lead now between the sides, it seems to be more a question of when, not if, Chelsea will be crowned league winners.

The big question mark is, can they win it this month? Wins this weekend and then in their trip to Leicester the following Wednesday would be enough, but are they in good enough form to win at the Emirates? While they are on a 12 game unbeaten run, they’ve been far from their best in recent weeks.

The Manchester United result last week was a big win, but when you look at the stats the league leaders were barely in the game. They got their goal on the counter attack and United couldn’t do enough to get back into it, but there wasn’t that swagger or confidence that we saw in the team early on this season. Of course, this is the time of the year for teams to dig in and get result when things are against them, but how long can Chelsea keep doing that?

At home at Stamford Bridge where the pitch is a little smaller and where their record is so good, you can grind out results. It becomes harder when you go to the side second in the table, who are bang in form, playing some great stuff and desperately trying to prevent you from winning the title. There are ways to play against that, dropping deep and going on the counter, something Mourinho isn’t adverse to. The difficulty with that is having the right striker.

Sadly, Didier Drogba isn’t the right striker anymore. He used to terrorise Arsenal, but he’s lost the power and pace he once had, and he’s looking like a placeholder upfront. With Diego Costa 100% out, the fitness of Loic Remy could be what decides this game. He’s got that pace on the counter, and he was in great form before his injury. Should he make it in time to play, that would be a huge boost for Chelsea’s title push.

Arsenal had their own injury worries early in the season, but with most of their squad fit, they’ve gone on a nine game winning streak that has them into the FA Cup final and to second place in the Premier League. They’re no pushovers, and they know that they can’t afford to drop points if they want to finish the season as runners up.

It’s going to be a tight game, but Mourinho’s record in these kinds of matches should just swing it. His side are unbeaten against their top four rivals from last season and this season so far, not to mention his unbeaten record against Wenger. Having the title on the line adds extra significance, making this the kind of game that suits Mourinho down to the ground.

LCN Verdict: Chelsea to win 1-0

Chelsea 1–0 Manchester United Match Report – 18th April 2015

Chelsea took a huge step towards winning the title with a victory over third placed Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. The only goal of the game came from the in-form Eden Hazard, capping off a week were he was nominated for player of the season. That’s opened up the possibility of the league leaders confirming the title at Leicester before the end of the month.

Once again the Blues had to start the game without either Diego Costa or Loic Remy, with 37-year-old Didier Drogba starting up front. There was also a brave choice in midfield, as Jose Mourinho put centre half Kurt Zouma in beside Nemanja Matic in the defensive midfield position. Oscar, Cesc Fabregas and Hazard were in the advanced midfield spots, with Willian benched due to illness.

United made a flying start to the match, and they troubled the home side early on. Luke Shaw outpaced Branislav Ivanovic to run on to a through ball, and he cut the ball back to an unmarked Wayne Rooney at the edge of the box. His shot went just wide, but as it nestled in the outside of the net the Red Devils’ away support and goalkeeper celebrated after thinking they had taken the lead.

There was controversy after a Chelsea breakaway, as David De Gea looked to have handled the ball outside the box. Ivanovic’s header fell to Fabregas, who had two United players and Hazard ahead of him. Fabregas played the ball high towards the Belgian, and De Gea came racing out of his box. Replays showed he deflected the ball away with his arm outside the box, but the referee waved away the Blues’ protests.

United couldn’t make the most of their early dominance and they were punished just minutes before half time. Falcao gave the ball away after a battle with John Terry, and it fell to Fabregas on the left hand side. He fed Oscar, who back-heeled it into the path of Hazard, and he ran clear and slotted the ball in between the legs of De Gea. After the clash between Falcao and Terry, they exchanged heated words again moments later.

The second half started off quite cagey, but it was no coincidence that United got back into the game as Marouane Fellaini started to shine. He has been a key player in their recent turn of form, and he was more effective after the break, which caused trouble for the hosts’ defence. Louis van Gaal obviously watched the game at QPR last week, as at times they recreated the quick pressing game that gave Chelsea so many problems at Loftus Road.

In the end, there was no repeat of United’s late equaliser at Old Trafford early in the season. Chelsea held on to take the three points, and eliminate United completely from the title race. Victories in their next two games will confirm the title, starting with a huge game against Arsenal next Sunday at the Emirates.

LCN Man of the Match: Eden Hazard

Chelsea v Manchester United Preview (Premier League) – 18th April 2015

This weekend Chelsea host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge and it’s an opportunity to widen the gap between them and the chasing pack. The in-form Red Devils will surely be a challenge, especially after they blew City away 4-2 at Old Trafford last week. They’re fighting for second place, and they’d love nothing more than to achieve that by closing the gap on the leaders.

Ahead of this weekend, Chelsea are currently seven points ahead of Arsenal and eight clear of United, with a game in hand on both. This weekend, the Gunners are at Wembley for the FA Cup semi final, so this is essentially the Blues’ game in hand on their rivals. Win here, and they’ll have a 10 point lead over Arsenal, with just six games remaining for both sides.

Of course, they’d also be 11 points ahead of United, having played a game less, so a win here could have them on the verge of confirming the title. Even though it’s hard to see anyone catching them at this point, Jose Mourinho will want things wrapped up as quickly as possible. They can take a big step towards that this weekend, but first they have to figure out a way past the Red Devils.

United have been in excellent form of late, beating Liverpool away and City at home to pretty much secure a top four spot and to get themselves in contention to finish second. They’ve been playing some excellent stuff, and Louis van Gaal seems to have created a way for his expensively assembled forwards and midfield to work together. Given the form that Chelsea have been in lately, it’s only their home record that has them as favourites here.

In recent league meetings, the Blues are unbeaten in their last four against United. In Premier League history, only three teams have ever gone five or more matches against them without losing. Could Mourinho lead his men into that elusive club? Or will the resurgence of Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini and United hand the league leaders their first home defeat of the season? At this stage, it’s a close one to call.

Diego Costa is missing from this clash, just as he was in the first meeting between the two at Old Trafford earlier this season. He’s out until next month, and second choice striker Loic Remy joined him on the injury table. Remy missed last week’s win over QPR with a calf problem, so Didier Drogba started, with Izzy Brown on the bench. It’s not yet known if Remy will start on Saturday, but having him back would be a huge boost ahead of this game.

With so much on the line, Mourinho may be tempted to go for the jugular in this one, but his team’s recent performances probably don’t lend itself to that. His first aim will be to stop the visitors’ attacks in their tracks, before hitting them on the counter. It may not be enough, but it is hard to see Mourinho losing a game of this size.

Mourinho was quick to play down an incident that took place in the closing stages of Chelsea’s defeat of Queen’s Park Rangers on Sunday. After Cesc Fabregas scored the winner for the Blues, objects appeared to rain down on the Chelsea players from the stands.

Coins and plastic bottles seemed to be amongst the things hurled towards the Chelsea players, and Branislav Ivanovic held his neck in pain when a lighter struck him.

Mourinho, however, didn’t want to make too big a deal of it; saying after the match: “If, at the end of the game, someone threw a pound coin, put it in your pocket. If someone threw a chocolate, eat it. It is no problem. Everybody needs a pound”.

Though his response might have been slightly tongue in cheek, the Portuguese manager had some sympathy with the difficult job the referee had to control such a highly charged occasion. He said, “The game was correct in the pitch and correct in the stands. It is not easy in an emotional game.”

He was far more forgiving than the QPR manager Chris Ramsey, who came down hard on the perpetrators of the offence. He stated, “I don’t know what happened and I didn’t see it, but if that’s the case [that things were thrown] we don’t want those people back in the club”.

The win over their London rivals put Chelsea 7 points clear of Arsenal with a game in hand, meaning they are one step closer to another Premier League title. If they win their game in hand then they’ll be 10 points clear with 18 points left to play for. Another 3 victories from their remaining fixtures will be enough for Mourinho to win his third title with the West London club.

Mourinho Agrees With Arsene Wenger Over The Ballon d’Or

Mourinho must have been speaking through gritted teeth recently when he admitted he agreed with Arsene Wenger over the Arsenal manager’s claim that the Ballon d’Or is a waste of time.

Wenger and Mourinho have had numerous fallings-out during their time together in the Premier League, with the Frenchman famously getting physical when he pushed his Portuguese counterpart earlier this season when their teams faced each other at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho, meanwhile, is hardly an innocent party in the matter, having constantly got underneath Wenger’s skin by calling him a “specialist in failure” and “a voyeur”, amongst other things.

The Chelsea manager completely agrees with Wenger, though, when it comes to football’s most prestigious award for individuals. The Ballon d’Or, in its current incarnation, has been awarded to the best player in the world since 2010. National team managers and captains, as well as the press, vote on who they think should win the award.

Wenger and Mourinho agree that awarding the best player in the world a trophy detracts from the notion of the team; that football as a concept is more important than any one player.

“For me”, said Mourinho, “football is collective. The individual is welcome if you want to make our group better. But you have to work for us”.

He went on to add, “When the top player arrives, the team is already there. It’s not him who comes to discover the team, like Columbus discovering America. No, no, you are coming now to help us be better”.

The Portuguese manager’s comments are enlightening, given that some feel he is the ultimate example of a manager who depends on superstars. Real Madrid have long been known for their Galácticos – world-famous, expensive players brought in with the specific aim of winning trophies. Having spent £225 million before Mourinho’s arrival, there as manager he went on to spend a further £82 million. His singings included Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira and Angel Di Maria. All of those are undoubtedly individual stars in their own right.

But others would argue that Mourinho is the master of getting the most out of his team, with players such as John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba willing to run through the proverbial brick wall if he asked them to.

Regardless of the truth of the matter, Jose Mourinho doesn’t often agree with Arsene Wenger, so it’s safe to presume he feels strongly about the lack of importance of the Ballon d’Or.

QPR 0-1 Chelsea Match Report – 12th April 2015

Chelsea left it late to claim the three points at Loftus Road as the league leaders got the win after a drab display. Cesc Fabregas produced the Blues’ only shot on target and the only goal of the game with just minutes to go to save the visitors’ blushes. Despite the poor performance, this win sees the table topper now just four wins from the title with seven games to go.

The lack of goals could be explained with a glance at the starting line-up, as Jose Mourinho went into the match without either of his two first choice strikers. Diego Costa has started a month on the side-lines with a hamstring injury, whilst Loic Remy suffered a calf injury ahead of the trip to QPR. That left Didier Drogba up front, supported by Cesc Fabregas. Youngster Izzy Brown was the reserve forward on the bench.

The first half was a scrappy affair, and as expected the visitors received a hostile reception from the home support. John Terry received the worst treatment, although the QPR faithful rounded on Eden Hazard as well. There was a local derby atmosphere, despite there being a big gulf between the two sides, and that played a part in this becoming a rather disjointed match.

Several Chelsea stars seemed rattled by both the crowd and the high energy pressing game used by QPR. One notable moment in the first half came when Branislav Ivanovic and Didier Drogba exchanged heated words across the pitch after the Ivorian failed to make himself available at a throw in. Rangers were doing their best to match the visitors physically, and they were succeeding.

The strugglers also had chances; they came close to worrying Thibaut Courtois on a few occasions. An effort from Charlie Austin and two from Matt Phillips were denied by the Belgian stopper, who was the best of a bad bunch as far as Mourinho’s side were concerned. He kept the team in the match, whereas the rest were struggling to string passes together. Their 70% pass completion rate was their worst so far this campaign.

As the match ticked on, the game looked set to finish goalless. The league leaders began to take control again late on, but given that they had yet to force Rob Green into a save it didn’t seem like a goal was coming. It was Green’s poor clearance that gave the Pensioners the breakthrough however. His skewed hoof fell to Hazard, and some neat interplay between him and Oscar set up Fabregas for the late slotted winner.

Once again, it wasn’t an inspiring performance from Chelsea, but it was enough to move ever closer to the title. With Manchester City losing again, they look out of it now. The Blues currently lead Arsenal by seven points and United by eight, with a game in hand on both. And, it just so happens that those two teams are the next two opponents for Mourinho’s side, so two wins from those and the title is all but assured.

LCN Man of the Match: Thibaut Courtois

QPR v Chelsea preview (Premier League) – 12th April 2015

Chelsea are looking to close in on the Premier League title with a win over local rivals QPR on Sunday. The Blues face Rangers right before third and fourth go head to head in the Manchester derby. With just five wins needed to claim the title, those two games could send the trophy that little bit closer to Stamford Bridge, should the results go the right way.

The title race took a big turn last week, as Manchester City slipped further behind with a defeat at Crystal Palace. The champions’ 2-1 defeat left them fourth, a point behind United and two off Arsenal. The Gunners are now Chelsea’s closest rivals, although they sit seven points behind having played a game more, with only six matches left of the season. It looks to be too big a gap to make up, but nothing is certain right now.

For all his confidence and swagger, Jose Mourinho isn’t about to celebrate the title before it is won. He made a point of stating the number of points needed in his post match interview, and you can imagine he was doing the same in the dressing room. With no other distractions, getting these results is all the Blues need to focus on, even performances take a back seat at this stage. The win over Stoke was far from an impressive display, but they got over the line in the end.

Next up is QPR, who are stuck in the bottom three and look set for relegation. They did get a big morale boosting win over West Brom last week, and a decent enough points at Villa Park in midweek, and they’ll be hoping to carry that good form on here. Loftus Road hasn’t always been the kindest of venues for Chelsea, despite the R’s league struggles. Had this match come early in the season you’d have expected a tough test, but Rangers’ great early form at home has dried up, which has seen them slip into the drop zone.

With a fully fit squad to pick from here, this game shouldn’t be too much of a challenge. Chris Ramsey’s side are 19th for a reason, and we’ve seen the Blues come through much tougher challenges than this over the campaign. Even though there is a little room for error with their lead at the top, five wins from seven is the aim right now, and that’s likely to shrink soon given how inconsistent some of the challengers have been.

But still, with the likes of Arsenal, United and Liverpool still to play in the final seven games, the team can’t afford slip ups against the likes of QPR. This should be a comfortable three points, which would be a step closer to lifting the title. If it isn’t, with some tough fixtures coming up, the chasing pack will be given hope. We may not have a full on title race, but there’s still little room for excitement. But Chelsea should win this one with room to spare.

LCN Verdict: Chelsea to win 3-1

Raheem Sterling

Mourinho On Sterling “Every Player Has His Price”

Raheem Sterling

Jose Mourinho has offered an opinion on the contract situation of Raheem Sterling at Liverpool by saying that “every player has his price”.

The 20-year-old Liverpool forward has come on to Chelsea’s radar since he reportedly rejected a £100,000 a week offer from the Merseyside club. Whilst a host of clubs appear to be monitoring the youngster, Chelsea might consider themselves slight favourites for his signature should he decide to leave Liverpool.

Sterling was born in Jamaica but moved to London when he was 5, meaning that a return to the capital might be a strong part of the English International’s thinking if and when he starts to look for a new club. That, combined with the fact that the Blues can still out-bid most other teams – especially their North London rivals Arsenal – should a bidding war ensue, means that Chelsea could be Sterling’s first choice destination if he left the Reds.

Jose Mourinho confessed that he has some sympathy with Brendan Rodgers over the contract wrangle, but also admitted “I don’t like players that don’t want to play for me and my club”.

The Portuguese manager compared Sterling’s situation at Liverpool with that of Zlatan Ibrahimovic when Mourinho was Inter Milan boss. The Swedish International told Mourinho and the Inter Milan hierarchy that he wanted to leave to go to Barcelona, so the deal was duly done.

On Sterling, Mourinho feels that “every player has a price. It doesn’t matter which player”. As an example Mourinho chose to talk about Eden Hazard who has recently signed a new contract at Chelsea. He said, “Do I want him to leave Chelsea? No. If he wants to leave, if he doesn’t want to work with me, if he doesn’t want to play for Chelsea, does Eden Hazard have a price? I think he has a price”.

Raheem Sterling has two years left on his current contract, which is worth £35,000 per week, and Mourinho admits he can understand why Brendan Rodgers and FSG aren’t keen to even consider letting the youngster go. “I also understand the philosophy of managers and clubs who want to keep the players at any price, who want just to say, ‘there is no price to sell – the player stays, whatever’. My philosophy is not better than that – it’s just different”, he said.

Whether Sterling stays at Liverpool for the foreseeable future or chooses to move on remains to be seen, but one thing seems certain: as long as things are up in the air Jose Mourinho and Chelsea will continue to monitor the situation in the hopes of swooping in should the chance present itself.

Diego Costa

Playing Costa Was A Mistake, Says Mourinho

Diego Costa

Jose Mourinho has confessed that he took a gamble when he brought Diego Costa on at half-time in the game against Stoke at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had led through an Eden Hazard penalty, but Charlie Adam scored a stunning goal from within his own half to equalise before the break. With the score 1-1 heading into the second half, the Chelsea manager decided to give Costa a run out in the hope of tipping the balance of the game into Chelsea’s favour.

Mourinho admitted earlier in the season that Costa couldn’t play more than 1 game in a week because of his previous hamstring problems. The injury flared up again when Chelsea played Hull just before the International break, and the Blues striker was forced to miss Spain’s games against Ukraine and the Netherlands.

With the game on a knife-edge, and Chelsea determined to keep pushing themselves on towards the title, Mourinho chose to gamble by replacing Oscar with Diego Costa, despite the forward being less than fully fit.

It was a gamble that backfired, with the Brazilian born Spanish international lasting just 10 minutes before limping off.

“If the result was 2-0 he wouldn’t play”, said Mourinho. “But I have to risk. My medical department had to risk… From all the scans two days ago, the muscle and image was completely clean”.

Having scored 19 goals since arriving from Atletico Madrid for £32 million in July last year, Costa has been an influential part of Chelsea’s title challenge. Now, with Costa likely to be out for at least 2 weeks, the pressure will fall on Loic Remy and Didier Drogba to help drag the Blues over the line for the title.

The striker will definitely miss games against QPR and Manchester United, with Chelsea still having to play Arsenal, Liverpool and a Leicester side that will scrapping with all their lives to avoid relegation.

Mourinho will be hoping that his squad has enough firepower left to keep themselves out of the grasp of Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United, should Costa fail to come back from his injury with the same form he has displayed all season.

Chelsea 2-1 Stoke Match Report – 4th April 2015

An incredible strike from Charlie Adam couldn’t prevent Chelsea taking another step towards the Premier League title. Goals from Eden Hazard and Loic Remy helped the Blues move seven points clear at the top, nine points ahead of champions Manchester City. The only downside for the leaders was an injury to Diego Costa, who came off the bench at half time but lasted just 10 minutes.

With Costa benched, it was Remy who stepped up to lead the line after his goal against Hull last time out. Jose Mourinho said he owed the Frenchman a run in the side, as Costa’s performances have slightly overshadowed him. Aside from that change, it was pretty much the regular team for Chelsea, as they looked to move closer to sealing another title win.

They looked to be heading for the three points when Philipp Wollscheid brought down Cesc Fabregas in the box, gifting the hosts a penalty. Eden Hazard stepped up to take it, and converted his ninth penalty in nine attempts. That goal was deserved after his performance, and he’s beginning to stake a real claim to be crowned player of the year come the end of the season. The hosts looked to be going in ahead at half time, until an incredible strike changed the game.

The moment that will have everyone talking long after the season is over came from Adam. The midfielder spotted Thibaut Courtois off his line, and attempted an unlikely effort from inside his own half. The Scotsman was a full 60 yards out, and his effort curled from going wide, back towards the goal, sailing over the head of the Chelsea keeper, who couldn’t get a strong enough hand on it to keep it out. That goal had to be appreciated by all, and Mourinho even claimed Adam had done something the likes of Pele and Maradona struggled to do.

During the game it’s likely the Chelsea boss was more annoyed than impressed. His side were being held at home, and pre-match he told his team that they needed wins to secure the Premier League trophy. He made a change at half time, with Costa replacing Oscar. The Spaniard was on the bench due to having a niggling hamstring problem, which came back to haunt him during the game. He lasted just 10 minutes, and after the match the manager said he could be out for up to four weeks.

Costa was replaced by Didier Drogba, as the Blues kept two up front to trouble Stoke’s back four. In the end, the goalkeeper did most of the work for them. He threw the ball out, almost straight to Willian. He played in Hazard, who laid the ball on a plate for Remy after a mazy run. Remy tapped home, securing three vital points, with only 16 more needed until the title is secured.

LCN Man of the Match: Eden Hazard
